Third Graders Put Economics Lessons into Action

Entrepreneurs were hard at work across the Chappaqua Central School District as third graders at Roaring Brook, Grafflin and Westorchard Elementary Schools transformed their learning into thriving marketplaces during their annual Market Day celebrations.

As the culminating project of their Social Studies economics unit, students applied their understanding of entrepreneurship, supply and demand, scarcity, pricing, production, and consumer decision-making by creating and operating their own businesses.

After weeks of planning, students worked in teams to develop products and services, determine prices, market their offerings and prepare for customers. On Market Day, they welcomed shoppers from throughout their schools, who used play money to purchase a wide variety of student-created goods and experiences.

The marketplaces featured an impressive range of products and attractions, including bracelets, jewelry, artwork, sports posters, flower arrangements, slime, glitter bottles, squish toys, clay sculptures, origami creations, keychains, perfume, mini books and face painting. Interactive experiences such as the "Ultimate Arcade" and "Bouncy Ball Battle" also proved popular among customers.

As students browsed the marketplaces and made purchasing decisions, business owners experienced firsthand how economic concepts influence real-world businesses. They observed which products were in high demand, adjusted to customer preferences and learned the importance of balancing production, pricing and sales.

Market Day provides students with an authentic opportunity to explore the roles of producers and consumers while developing collaboration, problem-solving and financial literacy skills. By connecting classroom learning to a hands-on experience, students gained a deeper understanding of how goods and services are created, marketed and exchanged within an economy.
