ENL
Courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages provide instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing for students whose primary language is not English. The program prepares students for academic coursework in all content areas by developing their cognitive academic language proficiency in English. In addition, students are supported in their efforts to integrate into the wider community. Placement is determined by the ESL staff based on assessment of each student’s English language proficiency.
WHAT is ESL? ESL is English for Speakers of Other Languages, so it is a program for the lucky students who speak more than one language. Learning another language is a complicated process which follows different paths for different students. Our ESL students come with a wide variety of learning styles, backgrounds and talents which must be recognized and accommodated. Our responsibility is to help each student achieve his or her potential so that each of them can fully enjoy all that our schools have to offer.
WHO are the ESL students? Students from Korea, Russia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Paraguay, Serbia, Japan, Israel...we are a United Nations (except that we get along better than most diplomats). Some have been in the United States for years, others arrive throughout the school year. Some speak no English at all when they arrive. Some speak English fluently but need support for writing. Some can read slowly with the help of a dictionary, but have difficulty discussing what they read or writing about it. All of them learn together and support each other in a way that is a model for how middle school students can cooperate together.
HOW are students selected for the program? When a student comes to any new school district, the school is required by law to ask parents to fill out a “Home Language Questionnaire,” which we use to determine which students need to be screened for ESL. Any student who speaks another language on a regular basis must be tested. New York State requires us to use a test called the NYSITELL, which includes sections in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The student’s scores will determine whether he or she is required to take ESL and at what level.
At the end of each school year, ESL students take the NYSESLAT, the New York State Test of English as a Second Language, which allows us to measure students’ progress in learning English. Students will continue to receive extra help from the ESL teacher until they reach the proficient level on this test. They will still be monitored for two years after this point, but may not attend ESL regularly.
WHEN do students attend ESL class? Every effort is made to avoid pulling students out of other classes. If a student does not study a foreign language, ESL can be scheduled during that time. A beginner or intermediate level student may come to our class during their English/Language Arts time, since ESL is their English class. At times, the ESL teacher may come to the core classes with the students to offer support during that academic time.
HOW does the ESL program help these students? Beginner level students receive comprehensive instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Their progress is constantly monitored and teaching is targeted to their particular situation. As students progress, their English language learning goals are met through the students' own interests and needs, often through their regular curriculum. For example, we work on advanced reading and writing skills while students are working on reading a novel for English, writing an original short story, or analyzing documents and writing an essay for a DBQ in Social Studies. Speaking skills are taught while students are preparing for an oral presentation in another class as well as during our ESL class discussions. At all levels, understanding cultural differences and American life is a constant topic of conversation.

TSP
The Transitional Support Program (TSP)
(Grades 9-12)
A flexible program providing students experiencing different levels of emotional distress regularly scheduled academic and therapeutic support. Educational supports include: direct instruction of coursework, study skills, organizational help, and assistance related to learning difficulties. Therapeutic supports include: individual, small group, and family counseling. Intensive case management services for students are available and include: teacher consultation, in class interventions, monitoring of student attendance, academic updates to students and families, individualized daily plans, consultation with private therapists, psychiatric consultation, and family meetings. Families become a component of the support plan designed for each student. The program's flexibility responds to a student's need, and can range from multiple contacts daily, course instruction for one or more classes, to a student initiated "check-in."
Crisis management services are available for students who cannot continue their school day because of emotional reasons, and include: assessment, de-escalation, development and implementation of coping strategies, follow-up to family and school personal, and progress monitoring. TSP faculty includes a psychologist, special education teachers, and teaching assistants. They provide consultation and support to classroom teachers who are working with students with significant social/emotional needs.
TSP may be an appropriate consideration for when students: return from hospitalization, residential treatment or other outside placements and need additional support; have experienced a decline in academic and/or behavior functioning; or have experienced significant social, family, or academic stress.
The TSP program is intended to help students transition to healthy, independent, and successful participation in general education classes as quickly as possible. It is not a long-term, self-contained special education placement.
