Superintendent's Update #24

June 7, 2021

Good Morning Chappaqua Central School District Parents and Guardians,

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Chappaqua Central School District has aligned our Continuity of Learning Plan to all applicable New York State Department of Health, Westchester County Department of Health, and New York State Education Department guidance. This strategy has served us well and has allowed us to keep our schools open and safe. I am writing today to gather preliminary feedback should the current guidance regarding mask wearing in schools change.

As outlined in Dr. Zucker’s letter to the Centers for Disease Control, the following potential adjustments to the NYSDOH mask guidance were presented:

Fully Vaccinated Individuals: Whether indoors or outdoors, students and staff who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks.

Unvaccinated Individuals: Indoor mask use will be strongly encouraged, but not required for students and staff. Outdoor mask use would not be required for students and staff.

If the NYSDOH changes their guidance to reflect the above, the State has determined that it will be your decision whether or not your child should wear a mask in school. To plan appropriately for this shift, and to be able make the necessary adjustments to our Continuity of Learning Plan should this change be made by the NYSDOH, we would like to gather your feedback.

Please consider filling out this LINKED SURVEY as soon as possible to share your plans and thinking should the mask guidance change before the end of the school year. During our Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night, I will present an overview of the feedback we received.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Christine Ackerman, PhD
Superintendent of Schools
