August 31st ~ Superintendent's Conference Day
The Chappaqua Central School District welcomed back faculty and staff for a Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 31, 2023. The opening day’s events included a keynote address from author of the I Survived book series, Lauren Tarshis, who spoke about lessons learned from her books and their connections to education.
Tarshis shared that her characters and how they overcome difficult circumstances has helped her become a more optimistic and hopeful person. “You need people in your life who are going to be there to support you,” she shared, reminding teachers of the role they plan in supporting students. “So many of my heroes are teachers. I hope you know the incredible impact you are going to have on your kids.”
Students also took the stage with two musical performances. Under the direction of Grafflin music teacher Steve Listengart, students performed an original song about belonging and inclusion. Then, following remarks from Greeley Student Council President Lucas Doran, Greeley students surprised the audience from the bleachers, singing Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin' accompanied by a band made up of our faculty and staff. Additional speakers for the morning included Superintendent Dr. Christine Ackerman, Board of Education President Hilary Grasso, CCT President Mike DeBellis, and CPTA President Suzanne Lodge. Throughout the morning’s remarks, speakers continued to focus on relationships and creating a sense of belonging and community for our staff and students.
Following the morning’s events, teachers returned to their schools to get ready for our students. Each school held faculty meetings and staff had time to prepare their classrooms and collaborate with colleagues. Teachers reviewed curriculum, set up their classroom spaces, and worked with their teams to prepare for teaching and learning. All staff also joined the District leadership team to review the strategic plan, COVID-19 policies, and updates to curriculum, technology, and school safety.
The opening day was also an opportunity to recognize the CCSD faculty and staff members for 25 years of service to the District. Congratulations to all!
