Tonya Wilson Named Principal of Roaring Brook
On July 28, the Chappaqua Central School District Board of Education named Ms. Tonya Wilson as Principal of Roaring Brook Elementary School, effective September 1, 2020.
Since 2010, Ms. Wilson has served as principal of Colonial School, which is located in the Pelham Union Free School District. As an elementary school principal, she worked collaboratively with building staff to execute all aspects of educational programs and activities for over 300 students. She also provided supportive supervision and mentoring for a combined faculty and staff of over 35 individuals.
Prior to being named principal at Colonial School, Ms. Wilson was a member of the teaching staff, She was a second-grade teacher from 1998-2003 and a fourth-grade teacher from 2005-2010. From 2004-2005, she was a third-grade teacher at Trinity School in Atlanta, Georgia. She began her career as a second-grade teacher at Marietta City Schools in Marietta, Georgia.
During Wilson’s tenure in Pelham, Colonial School was recognized by New York State as a Reward School for the academic years 2014-2019 with the designation of being named High Performing. Wilson also created a variety of programs including spearheading and implementing a highly effective PBIS behavioral program entitled “PAWS” in the school and recently launching the Diversity Book Bag program in partnership with her PTA. She facilitated and led the disaggregation of student assessment data to construct an environment that supports students’ academic achievements.
“Tonya has a been described by her colleagues as a strong leader, caring mentor and creative problem solver,” said superintendent Dr. Christine Ackerman. “She is an experienced educator who is poised to guide and support our Roaring Brook students. My colleagues and I are thrilled to welcome Tonya to Chappaqua.”
“I look forward to joining the incredible team at CCSD,” said Wilson. “This is an important time in education and I’m excited to meet the children, families, faculty and staff at Roaring Brook as we begin a new school year.”
Ms. Wilson received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She also holds a Master of Education from Pennsylvania State University and Advanced Certification School Building Leader from College of New Rochelle.
Ms. Wilson’s article entitled Strategies for Success, was featured in the June 2018 Newsline/NYSED publication based on the reward status identified by the State of New York. She also participated in the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education’s discussion on teacher education programs for Iona College undergraduates and a variety of mentoring programs throughout Westchester County. Ms. Wilson is also an active member of the Tri-State Consortium learning community.
