MAP Growth Screening (Grades 3-8)

The measurement of student learning through screening is essential as it provides useful feedback to educators, students, and families about how students are progressing. At the building and district level, we use performance data to help teachers and leaders monitor student performance and to determine appropriate and personalized instruction.

During the district-wide strategic planning process of 2018, we learned from teachers that they desired a system to better understand student performance beyond the 3-8 NYS assessments. Our administrators shared that additional data would assist in placement decisions for children who may need additional support. We also found out from parents that they sought more information on student progress throughout the school year, beyond our traditional grade reports and report cards.

In an effort to expand and explore ways we can all support our children through the use of meaningful screening we will be administering the computer-based MAP® Growth™ from NWEA®. These screenings will be administered to students in grades 3-8 in both ELA and Math from November 12th through December 6th. MAP Growth scores help teachers understand student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers can then use the results to tailor classroom lessons and set personalized goals for students. MAP Growth screenings are unique, as they adapt to each child’s responses to measure that child’s skill level. If a child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will help us better understand what our children know and what they are ready to learn.

Since MAP Growth provides immediate and accurate information about each child’s learning, teachers can analyze results by individual skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

We ask for your patience during our first administration. Despite extensive planning, we anticipate learning a lot about how to administer these screenings as well as how to use the results to personalize instruction for your child. Following the second administration, you will receive information showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.

We are excited to partner with our school community to unlock the potential of this powerful tool.
