Coronavirus Update - March 12, 2020

Dear Chappaqua School District Families,

As we continue to monitor the Coronavirus outbreak in our region, I am reaching out with an important update. I understand that this is a difficult and complicated time because we are all concerned about the health and well-being of our loved ones as the situation continues to evolve and unfold. This concern is shared by many and our goal is to keep you updated on the impact that this is having on our schools. As districts around us choose to close, or are ordered to close, I can understand why you may question the decision to keep our schools open. At this time, I will continue to follow the guidance outlined by both the NYS Department of Health and NYS Education Department that I shared with you in my communication sent on March 9, 2020. I will update you immediately if there are any adjustments made to this most recent closure guidance:

When a student or staff member attended school prior to being confirmed as a COVID-19 case, New York State Department of Health requires an initial 24-hour closure, in order to begin an investigation to determine the contacts that the individual may have had within the school environment.

The health and safety of our students, staff, and families remain at the forefront of every decision I make around this issue. Based on a phone meeting I had with the Commissioner of Education this morning, I anticipate a guidance document will be released shortly that will address distance learning and how we can use this as a way to support instruction while meeting NYS attendance requirements. Once this is issued, Dr. Adam Pease will share with you the significant work that our faculty has engaged in to prepare for distance learning and how we plan to move forward with this plan in the event of a long-term closure.

We will continue to send updates as new information becomes available.

Enjoy the long weekend with your families.
