Parental Notification of Required Body Mass Index (BMI) Reporting for the 2025-26 School Year
Dear Families of Students in Grades 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12:
As part of the school health examination, students are weighed and have their height measured. These numbers are used to figure out the student's body mass index or BMI. The BMI helps medical professionals determine if the student's weight is in a healthy range, or is too high or too low.
New York State Education Law requires that BMI and weight status categories be included as part of the student's school health examination. This year, our District has been selected to take part in a survey by the New York State Department of Health. We will, therefore, be reporting our students' weight status groups as well as numbers involving weight-related conditions. Only summary information is sent and no student names or identifying details are shared. However, if you wish, you may choose to have your child's information excluded from this survey report. The information, used this year, will be obtained from last year's physicals, which were received when the students were in kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh grades.
The goal of this survey, which will be sent to the New York State Department of Health, is to help health officials develop programs that support a healthy lifestyle for all children.
If you do not wish to have your child's weight status group information included as part of the Health Department's survey this year, please complete the BMI SURVEY OPT OUT FORM and return it to your school nurse. Please respond by Tuesday, January 27, 2026 to opt out of the survey.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Rota, RN, MSN
Nursing Department Chairperson
