Corrective Actions Taken Sept./Oct. 2016

September/October 2016 Lead Testing
RBS – DG – WO – BS – SB – HG
~ Corrective Actions ~

Fall 2016:

In September 2016, an independent testing agency took water samples from 531 locations throughout the three elementary schools and the two middle schools and tested them for concentrations of lead over 15ppb (parts per billion). In October 2016, 210 locations at the high school were tested as well.

All 741 testing samples were taken as a first draw, meaning there was no 30-second flushing done prior to the sample being taken. Any area that tested over 15 ppb is listed on the following pages along with the corrective action(s) that we have taken in response to the findings and in preparation of a retest.

I would like to point out that the majority of the areas with a reading over 15 ppb for lead were the sinks found in science and art classrooms and utility closets--sinks that are not intended to provide drinking water, sinks that get very limited use, or sinks that have not been used at all in quite some time.

Click HERE for the complete lead testing results as well as the corrective actions taken.

Sincerely,

Joseph Gramando

WESTORCHARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kitchen: Hand-washing Sink
Corrective Action: This sink was not intended for drinking water and students do not have access to this sink so it was questioned whether this sink should have been tested under the new state regulations. It was decided to test this sink just in case it was ever used for cooking. A sign was Immediately posted indicating that the sink is for hand-washing only--the water is not safe for drinking. The entire sink and faucet was replaced within 2 days. This new sink is listed for retest.

Room C3: Sink Sprayer Hose Room C4: Sink Fountain
Corrective Action: These rooms are currently not being used. They are slated for renovations and will become new learning spaces. The sink sprayer hose and sink fountain were immediately removed.

Boy's PE Office Bathroom: Sink
Corrective Action: This sink does not meet the requirement for testing since the bathroom is locked and there is no student access. It was tested anyway in case a staff member would ever use it for drinking water. The sink was immediately shut off and the faucet and water connections were replaced within 5 days. This sink is on the retest list.

ROARING BROOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Basement CCW, Room 2: Sink
Corrective Action: Immediately shut off the sink from use and replaced the faucet and water connections within 2 days. This sink is on the retest list.

Corrective Action: This sink was not in use. The faucet and water connections were replaced within 1 day. This sink is on the retest list.

Room 201: Sink
Corrective Action: The sink tested over 15 ppb; however, the water fountain right next to the sink with the same water line tested fine. The faucet and water connections were replaced within 1 day. This sink is on the retest list.

DOUGLAS GRAFFLIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Room 225: Sink 3 (This room was set up as a 5th grade science room and therefore has not used for several years. The sink was not being used.)

Corrective Action: Immediately shut off the sink from use and replaced the faucet and water connections within 5 days. This sink is on the retest list.

ROBERT E. BELL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Conference Room 214A: Bathroom Sink
Corrective Action: Should not have been testing since this area does not meet the requirements for testing as students do not have access. Immediately shut off the sink from use and the sink, faucet and water connections were replaced within 10 days. This sink is on the retest list.

Electrical Panel Room: Sink
Corrective Action: Should not have been testing since this area does not meet the requirements for testing as students do not have access. The faucet was Immediately shut off from use and replaced within 5 days. This sink is on the retest list.

Room 300 (Small Space Near Entrance): Sink
Corrective Action: Should not have been testing since this area does not meet the requirements for testing as students do not have access. The sink was not in use, but was removed anyway and all water and waste lines were capped within 20 days.

Science Rooms 334, 336, 338, 340, 342, 344, 346 and 348: Sinks
Corrective Action: All sinks in all science rooms are not used for drinking water. The sinks that tested over 15 ppb were immediately shut off from use and the faucets were replaced within 20 days. They are on the retest list. Considering the age of the building and the age of the all of the faucets in the science rooms, all of the faucets in all eight science rooms were replaced.

SEVEN BRIDGES MIDDLE SCHOOL

Corrective Action: All sinks in all science classrooms and prep rooms are not used for drinking water. The sinks that did test over 15 ppb were immediately shut off from use and the faucets and water connections were replaced within 20 days. They are on the retest list.

HORACE GREELEY HIGH SCHOOL

Corrective Action: Immediately shut off sinks in all science classrooms that are not using sinks for classroom work. Immediately posted not for drinking signs on all other sinks that are being used for classroom work until further investigation can be completed. Sinks will be retested with a 30-second flush in early November.
